Adolf Hitler meets the Italian leader Benito Mussolini in his railway carriage in the Brenner Pass, high in the Alps, close to the border between their two countries.

The haste with which the meeting was arranged had led Mussolini to suppose that Hitler "would soon set off the powder keg."

In the journey to the meeting, Mussolini tells his Foreign Minister, Count Galeazzo Ciano, that the Italians will not join the war until the moment that is "convenient" to them, that they will form the "left wing" of the offensive, tying up troops without actually fighting.

Returned, Unopened - A Beautiful WWII Love Letter

YouTube video, opens in new window or tab

This 3-minute video superbly recreates and honors the love between Bernie and Myra as she reads her final letter written two months after she last heard from him and sent the day before she received word of his death.

    The transcript of the video...

    Darling,

I was at your house tonight. They showed me some pictures of you. And this is what went through my mind. That hair is cropped close, but still curled around my finger as if I were grasping it. I kissed those lips. I've held those wrists with my fingers. My hands have been in those hands. My fingers have touched those sides and dug into those shoulders. And I know you had to be alive, because you're so alive! Someday when we have long night hours before us, I'll tell you all about this - how I felt, and what people said. Today I cried again. I found my lips forming the words. It's too hard. It's too hard. Darling, come to me in a dream tonight and tell me that you're alive and safe ... I love you 'til I die.

    Myra

The family of Myra Strachner Gershkoff donated the entire collection of letters to the New York State Library in 2007. The video was produced by Jacob Stark and published on YouTube on Aug 24, 2014.
