    Spotlight...

Emperor Hirohito, posthumously renamed Emperor Showa

Japan had never before in its history lost a foreign war, thus the very concept of defeat was alien to them. Furthermore, the Samurai code which infused their military culture utterly rejected the idea of surrender. Surrender was shameful and cowardly. The only honorable thing to do was fight on to death. In addition to that, their experience with conquering other countries was that the defeated people were at the mercy of the victor and they had never shown mercy. They raped plundered, looted and enslaved the peoples they ruled. Naturally they found it difficult to conceive that they would not face the same fate. It was for all these reasons that they resisted surrender.

What they expressed in their communications with the allies was concern for the position of the emperor, the human personification of the Japanese nation, culture and civilization. If the emperor ceased to be emperor then Japan would, in a very real sense, cease to exist.
