  • CBI - India: India's Congress Party supports the British war effort, while Mahatma Gandhi resigns in protest, declaring that India could not be party to a war ostensibly being fought for democratic freedom while that freedom is denied to India itself.

    Mahatma Gandhi

    Gandhi expressed strong opposition against Nazism but termed Britain's "war to save democracy" as hypocrisy.

    Commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi (the honorific "Mahatma" meaning "Great Soul"), Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi sought to practice non-violence and truth in all situations, and advocated that others do the same.

    During World War II, Gandhi penned an open letter to the British people, urging them to actually surrender to the Nazis. Later, when the extent of the holocaust was known, he criticized Jews who had tried to escape or fight for their lives as they did in Warsaw and Treblinka. "The Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife," he said. "They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs."

    Gandhi told the British people in 1940, "I would like you to lay down the arms you have as being useless for saving you or humanity. You will invite Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini to take what they want of the countries you call your possessions." ... "If these gentlemen choose to occupy your homes you will vacate them. If they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourselves, man, woman and child to be slaughtered, but you will refuse to owe allegiance to them."

    Wow.

    Gandhi's message of non-violent civil disobedience inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. But it is difficult, if not impossible, for the vast majority of us to accept his stand regarding the Axis campaign to plunge the world into darkness. We can only conclude that he possessed a higher spiritual intellect than we could ever hope to achieve. Evil continues to this day and perhaps will persist until we all come to share Gandhi's level of enlightenment.

  • Russian Front - North: Day 240 of 658 of the Siege of the Kholm Pocket, USSR lays siege to the Kholm Pocket but the Germans hold out for a about a year and a half.
