    31 Oct 41: The USS REUBEN JAMES, ablaze and sinking in the Atlantic after being torpedoed by German U-boat U-552 5 weeks before Pearl Harbor.

    According to the War Shipping Administration, the US Merchant Marine suffered the highest rate of casualties of any service in World War II.

    Officially, a total of 1,554 ships were sunk due to war conditions, including 733 ships of over 1,000 gross tons. Hundreds of other ships were damaged by torpedoes, shelling, bombs, kamikazes, mines, etc.

    The US Merchant Marine had no official historians and researchers, thus casualty statistics vary. According to a 1950 US Coast Guard report, 5,662 mariners on American flag ships died as a direct result of enemy action during WWII. Later Merchant Marine reports have increased that number to 6,847 and even as high as 8,421.
